The deer in the lake

On Sunday I was 'hiking' around the lake on Bowen island with Marco. As we were walking along the lake some people in a canoe started shouting at us. They asked us to help them free this deer that was trapped in the water. We walked out on the logs and we couldn't get close enough to see what was trapping her but she was shaking with cold. Well, at that point there were few choices and I wasn't able to walk away. I also didn't want to slip and spend the rest of the day in wet jeans so off they came. I stepped into the lake (muddy bottom, cold April water) and made my way over to the deer. She was so exhausted she didn't move or fight or struggle, she just let me move her leg off of the log. I floated her to shore, all she could do was keep her head out of the water. Marco got in and pulled her the rest of the way and the people landed the canoe and we all pulled her onto shore. Someone lived close by so they ran to call the animal control people and get blankets. The deer was just shaking and laying there and we did our best to dry her off.

I checked her body for blood (hence the positive female identification). Man her belly was huge, and she was really heavy though not very big. And she had (smallish) teats, do deer only get obvious teats when they're pregnant? Anyway, it was getting late so Marco and I dried off and got dressed again. Definitly the most excitment I've had walking around that lake.

Geek Out

Yeah, once again I am venturing into the wilds of linux/unix. I have recently installed Ubuntu which is a flavour of Linux. It is supposed to be the n00b version and it installed pretty nicely right off the CD. I have a new/old computer system now (new to me anyway) which is powerful enough to run stuff. However, Ubuntu is not as easy as the Mepis linux distribution I put on my parents computer. Ubuntu didn't recognize the second hard drive and suddenly I was onto the command line editing the fstab file using vi. Good thing I had seen a fair amount of that for the month I was installing FreeBSD on really really ancient hardware. For the record FreeBSD is a unix like operating system because I know everyone is really interested in these details... Anyway, you ask why am I installing Linux in the first place? Because it's free and I want to learn. That's about it. And it's free. And pretty powerful for something that's free. And sometimes I like to geek out.

Pink talks in TO

So there's been this song, Stupid Girls. I've just heard a bit of it on the radio. After watching all the undergrads running around half naked on campus the last week I really liked this quote from Pink: "Look, girls — guys are going to like us anyway; you don't have to take off all your clothes to get them to chase you around,". Article....
