Escher

In The Hague they have a fantastic museum devoted to Escher. It is the old palace and it was a very lovely building.

To set off all the black and white prints they have the museum painted in red, with fantastic weird chandeliers in strange shapes (like bombs and umbrellas).

As well as the prints they had the original blocks that the prints were made from. Here is one from the lizards.

Here is an photo of his work in progress. Escher was Dutch but loved Italy and the mountains (I get the mountains, going to see about Italy soon). When had had to move back to Holland (first he livedin Switzerland but hated the snow) he said the landscapes were so boring that he went more into his imagination.

This is an Escher piece I have never seen it before - his work translated into wood.
