Hiking in Saas-Grund

On Saturday I headed out to go on a hike around Saas-Grund. We showed up in the town without any real plans and asked at the tourist office what there was to do. But first, while we were walking around town we saw this poster.

I was told it was a local joke, they decided to imitate the standard car calendars with the girls posing but instead they posed them with farming activities related to the region. The tourist office recommended this walk, it was just along a closed road so it wasn't very technical. The weather was beautiful though and the snow was packed hard enough that we didn't need snowshoes.

We saw several  skiers coming down from the mountain but in general it was a pretty straight road up.

Off to the side we could see the glaciers coming over the edge of the mountain suggesting just how much further up things went on either side.

It was still a bright day when we made it up to the lake and this was when the view improved.

It was also one of those few times when the mountains appear empty, no town visible.

After spending time hanging out on the dam we headed down the long road and started walking back to town. On the way there we saw some people hanging around at a farm so we stopped by to have a look. It was a bull who had been brought in to breed with the cows. There were three cows and two farmers were in the yard. One man had the stick and would call the cow into the snow. The bull would follow and eventually they locked horns and fought just like I had seen them fight in the summer (but that was just cows fighting). We watched for maybe half an hour without seeing a whole lot else. The cow was only slowly letting the bull approach but they only fought the once. And if you are less familiar with livestock, in all my time in Canada I'd never seen a live bull (because they are dangerous) and all cows are artificially inseminated. So to see this was pretty rare.
