This weekend I went with some friends hiking in the Jura mountains. We went around the town of Solothurn because there are dinosaur footprints that you can see in a cliff face.
We caught the train somewhat early in the morning and started our walk through the town. We quickly came to a small valley/gorge with a stream running through it and a path beside.
This trail was obviously very popular because it was so pretty and accessible.
At the end of the gorge there were several small buildings and a church placed against the walls of the gorge.
And then we headed up along country roads. Along the way I was excited to see automated lawnmowers. They moved very slowly and cut the grass but I can't imagine the safety designs that go into the automated blade.
We walked through the forest along gravel roads and eventually made it to the dinosaur footprints. It was a large cliff face and apparently it had once been at the edge of a sea. Then the footprints were covered by algae, then underwater when the land flooded and eventually were uncovered from quarrying. Apparently the footprints are some of the best preserved and consist of a bunch of large sauropods.
It's difficult to get a sense of the scale of the footprints but according to the written boards the biggest feet are almost a meter long and the stride length between the big hind feet is 5m.
And above the cliffs a bird.
After seeing the footprints we wandered slowly back to the train station, stopping at a stream where we saw a salamander.
The weather was perfect, beautiful, sunny and warm.
The town of Solothurn was also very nice, it had an old town centre and miracle of miracles - shops were open on a Sunday!
And then back to Lausanne where I hosted a dinner for friends, a perfect day.
