How things work in the lab
Today we had an illustration of how different lab thinking is. A labmate was filtering lysed bacteria (precious lysed bacteria) into a container sitting in ice. She accidentally pushed the container in and ice got into her sample. So what do microbiologists think? "Oh no! Dirty ice is contaminating my bacteria". Several of us were watching (hanging out in the lab, watching someone filtering a sample, who said science isn't exciting) and we all thought it. Some of us even gasped. Then after a moments pause I reflect on what the real world thought would be and just how different a microbiology lab can make you think.
