s-Hertogenbosch

We drove to s-Hertogenbosch to see the canals and the gothic church. The canals are really nice, they are narrow and go throughout the city. As the city was not allowed to be built past the walls, people would build over the canals and so you have these long tunnels. We took the boat tour on the canal. They provided an English write up but the tour itself was in Dutch. Toon gave me a translation. This cool guy was at the beginning at the dock.

After the second world war the canals fell into disrepair but finally in the 80's there was enough money to repair them as well as the restoration ethics that wanted the canals built as they once were.

Here is an example of a house built over the canal.

We took the the little boats out into the Poulder, the fields could be flooded when the city was under attack. Here you can see the city walls.

After the canal tour we had a lovely lunch and then went to check out the gothic church. Most of my lunches have been packed sandwiches, but this time we sat outside and I had a toasted ham and cheese sandwich.

The gothic church was very impressive. I didn't climb the tour of this church (only church in Europe!).

As we were walking back to the car we stopped to have a local dessert speciality - a bossebol, essentially a giant creampuff covered in melted chocolate. Fat and sugar, definitely what good desserts are made of.
